Brian Cirmo
Drawing from historical, literary, and pop cultural sources as well as personal memories, Brian Cirmo’s narrative paintings use humor and nostalgia to depict contemporary scenes of longing and ennui. Cirmo’s paintings have been exhibited in upstate New York, where he lives and works, and at galleries in New York City and elsewhere in the United States. In scenes recalling Nicole Eisenman’s witty tableaux of absurdity and estrangement, Cirmo’s exaggerated figures are depicted on park benches, bobbing in the ocean, watching Star Wars, and lounging lazily with a cat. Frequently depicted with eyes closed, his subjects may be daydreaming, dozing off, or in states of anxiety. Sprinkling iconic album covers and band T-shirts alongside references to artworks by Jasper Johns, Barnett Newman, and Jackson Pollock, Cirmo places his work in dialogue with 20th-century pop culture and art history.
