Is this little girl surveying Westward expansion as evidenced by her cowboy gear? Some might recognize her orange outfit as the governmental NASA space attire. (Fun fact, though she is in a costume that alludes to the American imperial impulse, her father happens to be Finnish!) Is she pondering the compulsion to conquer the final frontier, outer space, in her little space suit? No. She is playing pretend. The show “Just Playin’ Around” at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art reminds us that, “Industrialized societies often treat play as childlike or trivial, an obstacle to productivity.” The drive to explore the unknown and to play pretend are at their core, expressions of wonderment. Child-like wonder makes us ask what is beyond what we think we already know?
