The small icon paintings are from the artist's series, Obstinate Toy Soldiers. Many are inspired by photographs of little girls dressed in costumes of their own choosing, often photographed by their mothers. The child assembles a costume in order to engage in pretend. She is constructing an identity out of fragments of culture. Disney, Hawaii, Spain, Princess, Festival. She's metabolizing images before she even knows she's doing it.
