Z.T. Nguyễn Vietnamese‑American, b. 1997
A dark cat looks out from the bottom of a red field, with mosquitoes scattered through the space above it. Nguyễn is drawn to animals that know how to navigate the dark. The cat’s steady gaze gives the drawing its stillness; the mosquitoes make that stillness uneasy. Up close, the joined sheets of paper remain visible, bringing a sense of handling and movement to an image that seems, for the moment, to be holding its breath.
